Local Cyclist Steve Barbour Killed By Driver in Hilliard

It's happened again.

Steve Barbour, a long-time cyclist and member of Columbus Outdoor Pursuits, was riding on his way to a COP ride when he was struck by a driver that police suspect of being under the influence. He died last night after the accident put him into a coma. You can get more information at NBC4's website.

Some discussion of this accident and its causes, aftermath, and legal situation are also available at Yay Bikes. Also, there are some folks who knew Steve, who was active in the Columbus cycling community for years, who are talking about him a bit there. Please drop by and give your condolences if you can.

Update: The Dispatch is reporting that the killer's name is Edward S. Miller, 28. The charge against him will be aggravated vehicular assault - aggravated because he was under the influence. They also mention that Barbour was obeying all the rules of the road. Sad that they have to mention that, but it's nice to see them sticking up for him.

People, not speed.

  1. A Dispatch article confirms involvement of local news anchor as well. http://tinyurl.com/maaqd8

  2. I am not a conspiracist, but it seem the Local news channels are putting forth a concerted effort to bury the story or report incomplete facts. Gabe Spiegel, the newscaster, was a passenger in the vehicle that struck Steve Barbour. I am not saying he's to blame, but I have been following his broadcasts and his Twitter posts and he has made no acknowledgment what so ever about the incident. He just babbles about coffee and such. If I were in a car, with an impaired driver, even as a passenger, where someone was killed, I would show some kind of guilt. The man is a douchebag. Please take the time to let the stations know that, just because one of there goldenboys was involved does not give them the right to bury this story. Take a few minutes out of your day and send them an email telling them how you feel about their lack of coverage. Gabe Spiegel should get no more consideration than the Steve Barbour, the victim in this.

  3. I agree with anonymous' comment about the local news stations inability to bring to light one of their own members screwup. To afford 'professional courtesy' to someone involved in a killing is an outrage and should be punished. I've known of and about Steve Barbour for years. If anything, he was overly cautious as a biker.

  4. I'm in full agreement in this case, and if it comes out that Spiegel or anyone connected with him was using undue influence to protect either himself or Miller (who is a former employee of NewsCenter, as I understand) then let loose the dogs of war. But let's give this some time and see how it pans out.
